Saddles "n" Spur's seeks to provide, a balance between mounted and unmounted activities. Horseless members who can pass horsemanship standards levels one and two may be able to participate in select mounted activities using leased or shared horses. However, the county requires a season leased agreement for horseless members who wish to compete in mounted events at the Ag. Expo. and State competitions. Ask your  leaders about for specific eligibility requirements for mounted competition

 

Saddles" N" Spur's - A great way to:

       Make horse loving friends and learn more about horses

       Do fun crafts and activities and provide community services

       Participation in club, county and state horse focused events

       Gain communication and leadership skills

Who can Join?

       Any child ages 8 -18 horse owning or horseless

       English, Western, or any breed or orientation

What do I have to do as a Member?

       Attend monthly meetings and activities

       Maintain a project record book

       Complete associated activities from project guide

       Do a demonstration of each selected project each year.

What does it cost?

       Sign up is free through the county extension office

       Most activities and events are free of charge including opportunities to exhibit at Ag. Expo and State Fair However, the club does require all families to assist at WCHC shows and the annual fun show where the funds for these activities are earned.

       Equestrian activity guides can be purchased at the extension office.

What doesn't Saddles "n" Spurs do

       Does not provide free horse leasing or riding lessons ( We can help you make connections with those who do).

       Does not provide a place for parents can just drop off and pick up their children (parent involvement is important).

       Does not take on your responsibility for making sure you meet state/county eligibility requirements.

       Does not take the place of regularly riding lessons or knowledgeable adult oversight in working with your horse.

What would my parent have to do?

       Attend meetings with me and support my selected projects.

       Sign up as a 4-H volunteer and attend county training.

       Assist me with leadership or committee assignments I accept.

 

Washington County Horse Council

The horse council is looking for parents, leaders, horse people and anyone interested in helping give equestrian programs in the county a real boost.  So far the council is made up of 4 - h parents and leaders who are working to provide activities that benefits the 4 - H program and to coordinate activities between individual clubs.

Accomplishments

Realigned Ag. Expo. Horse Classes to focus on the child's accomplishment with their project animals.

Added full division of events at Ag. Expo so that horseless members, who could participate fully( horse knowledge, judging and hippology)

Sponsors open horse shows each summer with all proceeds being donated to the county 4-H Equestrian Program.

Sponsors county knowledge bowl competition.

Raised money need to purchase new jumps, dressage cones, a timer system and much more to improve the horse facilities for the Ag. Center.

Established a Washington County 4-H Equestrian Scholarship Fund for graduating seniors.

Promotes 4-H and horse based activities within the community by coordinating club sponsored shows. Schooling shows, charity trail ride and through advertising the 4 - H equestrian program.
